Module Description
This module provides a comprehensive understanding of piping support integrity, high-temperature stress analysis, and compliance with ASME B31.3. You’ll explore allowable stress codes for piping supports, clamp design weaknesses, and the impact of thermal gradients on structural integrity. Through Finite Element Analysis (FEA), mathematical modeling, and graphical representations, you’ll assess high-stress locations, optimize clamp tensioning, and ensure pressure boundary integrity. Additionally, the course covers constant spring hanger selection and optimization, helping you balance size, weight, and cost while maintaining long-term reliability in piping systems.
Learning Objectives
After completing this course, the student will earn One (1) PE/PDH Credit towards being a Subject Matter Expert (SME).
When the student completes Module Six, Advanced Pipe Supports Code Discussion, the student will be able to:
- Locate the ASME B31.3 code paragraph governing code reference for allowable stresses in piping supports.
- Apply clamp geometry knowledge to a single clamp to assess the code impacts of clamp tensioning to the piping pressure boundary by writing five (5) steps necessary to assure pressure boundary integrity after clamp installation.
- List four impacts of adverse thermal gradient in clamps and define 4 Finite Element Analysis (FEA) parameters necessary for clamp integrity assessments.
- Graphically represent the thermal state of a welded pipe support and define the location of high stress locations for a high temperature welded pipe support.
- List four common FEA parameters for final code-compliant design of any high temperature welded support.
- Identify three parameters required for crevice corrosion of pipe supports.
- List three impacts of material selection related to high temperature code complaint thermal stress states.
- And Much More!
