Module Description

This module covers pipe bends, miter bends, and branch reinforcement per ASME B31.3, teaching students to calculate wall thickness, measure bends, and identify when a miter bend is required. Through hands-on case studies, students will pressure rate miter bends, use PTP’s Miter Bend Design Tool®, and design code-compliant bends. The course also explores area replacement calculations and reinforcement pad design, ensuring students can properly assess and reinforce branch connections for structural integrity.

Learning Objectives

After completing this course, the student will earn one (1) PE/PDH Credit towards being a Subject Matter Expert (SME).

When the student completes Module Four, Pipe Bends, Mitered Bends, and Branch Connections, the student will be able to:

  1. Utilize terminology and code to calculate the minimum wall thickness for a single given
bend at the intrados and extrados.
  2. Identify the proper location for a pipe bend wall thickness measurement from a 3D model of
    the bend.
  3. Identify piping system bends that require a miter bend from a list of 4 change-in-pipe-
    directions.
  4. Calculate the allowable pressure for a given pipe miter bend requirement.
  5. Fully design a code-compliant pipe miter bend for a given angle, with a given number of
miters and at a predefined process condition.
  6. Determine the need for an area replacement calculation, and if needed, calculate the
required areas replacement for a given branch at a given angle and process condition.
  7. Design a reinforcement pad, when needed, for a given branch at a given angle for a specific
    design pressure and temperature.
